Communications and Outreach Coordinator

Portland Trails is a nonprofit land trust now celebrating over 20 years of conserving land and building trails and infrastructure for recreation and transportation in greater Portland. We are seeking an experienced Communications and Outreach professional. This position is responsible for the execution of online and print communication, media relations, and marketing of Portland Trails’ events, programs and campaigns with a focus on developing and building relationships between Portland Trails and its constituencies, including members, funders and the media. The ability to effectively manage event logistics and myriad details is crucial to success in this position.

Duties include

  • -Implement a communications plan that advances Portland Trails’ brand identity; broadens awareness of its programs and priorities; and increases the visibility of its programs and projects across key stakeholder audiences.
  • -Create external communications that promote, enhance and protect the organization’s brand and public reputation.
  • -Utilize Portland Trails online communication channels including website, email, social media and newsletter to promote and achieve the organizations’ mission and goals.
  • -Develop and implement occasional outreach programs and events for a wide constituency.
  • -Successfully execute Portland Trails’ major fundraising events.
  • -Handle event logistics such as invitations, venue, food, permitting, etc.
  • -Recruit and manage event and outreach volunteers.
  • -Implement marketing and promotion plans for events.
  • -Manage Portland Trails’ presence at community outreach and other public and corporate programs that strategically positions the organization to present with other events, businesses, and organizations.



  • -Knowledge, understanding and experience with print and online communications tools
  • -Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple projects at the same time
  • -Experienced in media relations
  • -Highly organized, creative and self-motivated
  • -Strong attention to detail, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness
  • -Good written and verbal communication skills
  • -Fluency with social media channels
  • -Excellent interpersonal skills
  • -Solid knowledge of office administrative procedures, minimum of 1 year office experience
  • -Solid computer skills including a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and Word Press
  • -A passion for the Portland Trails mission
  • -Associate degree or minimum of 4 years of professional communications experience
  • -Available for some evening and weekend activities

Pay:$16 / hour 20 hours a week.

Seasonal Professional Trail Steward – Search Extended

Purpose of the position: To support all trail construction, trail maintenance, habitat enhancement, school ground enhancement and other physical work throughout the trail network.

Approximately 400 hours for the season. We prefer 24-30 hours per week but can be flexible.
Start Date:  Flexible, May or June.
Pay:  $15-16 / hour.

Essential Functions:

  • -Responsible for the functionality, ecological integrity and appearance of Portland Trails’ network of properties and trails.
  • -Responsible for the safe use, maintenance and repair of equipment and tools.
  • -To support safe and rewarding volunteer engagement experiences for local corporate, and community groups that bring the participants closer to Portland Trails.
  • -To serve as a representative of Portland Trails at all times. (this is a very public position)

Equipment Use: Computer, internet, skid-steer, brush mower and other landscaping tools.

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

  • -Minimum of 2 years trail-building or landscaping experience
  • -Knowledge and understanding of land conservation practices, as well as hands-on experience.
  • -Demonstrated experience building trails and boardwalks, mowing, tree work, stonework, mechanical maintenance, invasive plant removal, and structure repair.
  • -Familiar with southern Maine ecosystems.
  • -Demonstrated success managing diverse groups of volunteers.
  • -Proficient with a chainsaw and other landscaping tools.
  • -Strong attention to detail, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness
  • -Excellent interpersonal skills
  • -A passion for the Portland Trails mission.
  • -Available for occasional evening and weekend activities.

Physical Requirements: 

  • -Lifting , carrying, pulling, pushing  100 lbs.
  • -Must be able to work outdoors in all weather for 8 hours at a time.
