Seasonal Professional Trail Steward

Portland Trails is a nonprofit land trust now celebrating 30 years of conserving land and building trails and infrastructure for recreation and transportation in greater Portland. We are seeking a full-time Seasonal Trail Steward to conduct trail construction, trail maintenance, habitat enhancement and other physical work throughout the trail network.


-Responsible for maintaining, in partnership with other field staff, the functionality, ecological integrity and appearance of Portland Trails’ network of trails,

-Responsible for the safe use, maintenance and repair of equipment and tools,

-To support safe and rewarding volunteer engagement experiences for local corporate, and community groups that bring the participants closer to Portland Trails, and

-To serve as a representative of Portland Trails at all times. (This is a public-facing position.)


-Minimum of 2 years trail-building or landscaping experience

-Demonstrated experience building trails and boardwalks, mowing, tree work, stonework, mechanical maintenance, invasive plant removal, and structure repair

-Familiar with southern Maine ecosystems

-Proficient with a chainsaw

-Experience operating brush mower, preferred

-Demonstrated understanding/practice of working safely in a physically demanding field job

-Strong attention to detail, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness

-Excellent interpersonal skills

-A passion for the Portland Trails mission

-Available for occasional evening and weekend activities

Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climbing, pushing/pulling, etc.)

-Lifting, carrying, pulling, and/or pushing 100 lbs.

-Must be able to work outdoors in all weather for 8 hours at a time

-Will be required to wear a face mask while working


Portland Trails offers a friendly work environment and an opportunity to make a contribution to your community. Position is full-time for ten weeks, but we can be somewhat flexible. Pay depends on experience but is in the range of $15/hour.
