Fore River Trail was funded with restoration funds from the Julie N oil spill in Portland Harbor in 1996. The trail opened on the fifth anniversary of the spill, September 27, 2001. The gravel and boardwalk trail runs along the Fore River and rail tracks, through wooded and marsh areas east to Thompson’s Point. This is a great route to all the activities, including concerts and breweries, on Thompson’s Point from the Libbytown neighborhood and outer Congress Street.

To the west, a short walk along Congress Street sidewalks will connect you to the Stroudwater Trail and the Fore River Sanctuary. Updates on the Fore River Trail in 2014-2016 have improved the trail surface for better commuter bicycle use, though some road bikes may not be suitable for the gravel path.

This trail is sponsored by Adopt-A-Trail partner: Bissel Bros. Brewing
