With so many inspiring natural spaces nearby, it’s no surprise Greater Portland is abundant with poets! To celebrate this intersection of art and nature, we’re excited to invite you to a Trailside Poetry Reading! Join us next Thursday, 10/13, from 5:30 to 6:30pm for a free poetry reading featuring a slate of local talented poets reading their poems about nature, in nature. We’ll gather at Fish Point on the Eastern Prom Trail. Bring a chair, bundle up, and settle in for an evening of nature and words. Featured poets: Samaa Abdurraqib, Mike Bove, Mihku Paul, Hailey Talbert, and Evie Smith Thank you to our event partners, @thetellingroom, @mainehumanities, and @portlandpubliclibrary!

The area between Blueberry Rd and Hutchins Dr is closed in the winter to give deer a safe place to weather the cold Maine winters. .. .. These common backyard visitors are not only fun to watch, they help our tree population. Squirrels don’t dig up all of their buried nuts, which results in more trees in our forests! Take a stroll through Riverton Trolley Park and Riverton Rail Trails and see how many squirrels you can find! ... ... A great way to support these accidental tree planters and the forests that house them is by becoming a Portland Trails member! These herons love marshes (like parts of the Fore River Sanctuary), where they can be seen hunting for small fish and frogs. Take a trip to Portland’s only natural waterfall, and see if you can spot one of these beautiful birds! It’s straw hat season! 👒 Jaime is putting t It’s straw hat season! 👒 Jaime is putting the final touches on the latest section of the North Deering bicycle byway. This stretch connects University Park & Canco Road, goes past a pond, and crosses over Milliken Brook. Portland Trails is working on this multi-year bicycle byway project with the @cityportland to develop a street and trail byway that will improve access to active transportation for thousands of Portland residents. The trail sections we’ve completed so far are six feet wide and have a hard surface to accommodate as many modes of human-powered transportation as possible!
