The Clark Brook Trail is Portland Trails' newest trail! Opened in June of 2023, this one mile trail in Westbrook connects the business parks of Eisenhower Drive with Spring Street. It passes through forest and meadow and crosses the Clark Brook, a small stream that flows to the Stroudwater River. The trail also connects to the trail system at Smiling Hill Farm, providing access to the farm's barnyard and dairy store. (Homemade ice cream, anyone?) The trail meets official byway standards, meaning it is six feet wide with a smooth stone dust surface. It's designed for commuting and is suitable for road bicycles, strollers, and potentially wheelchairs in the right weather conditions. Aside from the paved trails in downtown Portland, this is our most accessible level of trail, comparable to the Back Cove Trail.

At Spring Street, the Clark Brook Trail connects to the Stroudwater Trail, which meanders along the Stroudwater River and brings trail users to the intersection of Congress and Westbrook streets in Portland. The first phase of the Stroudwater Trail was constructed over 20 years ago, and since then, Portland Trails has steadily been moving upstream into Westbrook.

In 2021, the IDEXX Foundation awarded Portland Trails with generous funding to construct a new trail to connect the existing Stroudwater Trail with the businesses near Eisenhower Drive with the goal of providing Westbrook residents and workers more opportunities for people-powered transportation and recreation. This trail would not have been possible without their support!
