In these moments, we respond quickly to restore access to the trails. Last month, we were fortunate to take a walk throu Last month, we were fortunate to take a walk through the Fore River Sanctuary with two representatives from the Nyando Development Community Center for Environmental Conservation (NYADEC) in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. We talked about the importance of placemaking (particularly in urban green spaces) as well as the effects of climate change and flooding in both of our countries. It was wonderful to meet our new Kenyan colleagues, Sospeter Onunga and Benard Nyabua!

“We are Portland Trails members because extensive trail systems are critical to the health and vitality of our natural and urban environments. We love that Portland Trails keeps stretches of land wild and undeveloped while also promoting connectivity throughout the city. We also have full confidence in the capacity of the staff and board and are impressed by their commitment to making sure everyone feels like they belong on the trails.”

Yesterday, our Inclusion Coordinator, Angelique, g Yesterday, our Inclusion Coordinator, Angelique, gave a presentation introducing the Portland Trails network to students in a Level 1 English class at @portlandadulted. Afterward, she led them on a sunny walk to the Eastern Prom Trail ☀️ For many of the students, it was the first time they’d been on a trail since moving to Portland! (Cue the selfies 📸) This is the first of several presentations & walks she’ll be leading at Portland Adult Education this month. 

PS. Thank you to Selma, our Portuguese translator! She helped many of these new English learners understand how trails can be an important resource for our health.

Please avoid using this trail until further notice. We will update you with information about any additional flooding as we continue to assess our trails. 

⚠️ UPDATE: The Presumpscot River Preserve has also flooded, and sections of it are impassable!

🌲Portland Trails is looking for its next Executive Director! The ED will provide staff leadership; lead and direct the organization’s efforts to fulfill its mission; and be responsible for administration, program management, and strategic planning. Might this be you?

🌲We’re also looking for one or two Seasonal Trail Crew Members to join the team this summer! Do you enjoy working outdoors and solving unique challenges on a daily basis? Trail Crew Members will conduct trail construction, trail maintenance, habitat enhancement, and other physical work throughout the trail network. Sound intriguing?

This fall, they spent a day cleaning up and taking care of the Thompson’s Point Trail, their adopted trail that leads right to their door. In case you missed it, the white trail in the Fore In case you missed it, the white trail in the Fore River Sanctuary has reopened! All the bridges are back in place (shoutout to our amazing volunteers), so you can resume your runs, walks, and bike rides 😃
Three cheers for our bridge repair crew! 👏👏👏 Today, an awesome group of volunteers helped restore two bridges in the Fore River Sanctuary that had been displaced during last month’s rain and wind storm. The trail is now officially passable once again!

Maintaining the trail network is only possible with many hands. Volunteers make it happen, whether it’s building a bridge or pulling one out of the marsh! Today, we’re feeling extra thankful for everyone who has ever helped us care for the trails.

This Tuesday, Jan. 10th from 11am to 1pm, we’re gathering a group of trail volunteers to help reposition several bridges in the Fore River Sanctuary that were moved out of place due to high tides and flooding last month. Your help will make this trail passable once again!
